The Cheshire Life and Times of Two Sisters
Joe Scarborough sat down to afternoon tea in Finney Green Cottage, Wilmslow, and Cheshire, which dates back to 1705. He asked the two Cheshire girls to recall their childhood days. Their father worked for Simon Engineering in Cheadle Heath. One of the sisters taught at Peel moat School, which you can see in the picture. If you look closely at Vernon’s Greengrocers, London Road, Hazel Grove you may recognise Percy from Coronation Street, well this is where he did his shopping. You can catch the bus to Nelstrop Road, and then enjoy a pint in the Royal Oak, before visiting the Antique Shop in Hillgate, Stockport which was the home of their grandfather. Many Saturday afternoons were spent shopping at Glossop Market where you could enjoy the most delicious lemon meringue pie in a quaint little teashop. The QE2 is a very special feature in the picture that is where one of the sisters found romance and the love of her life!!!!

In My Liverpool Home

After Joe Scarborough’s visit to Liverpool, with a true Scouser, he managed to capture on canvass life in the 50’s and 60’s for a lad who was bread and buttered on the streets of what was to become the City of Culture, wow - who would ever have dreamed that! Liverpool has two football teams Liverpool and Liverpool Reserves. Football is more important to a Liverpudlian than life and death. Wrayburn Street in the Edge Hill area of Liverpool was where this boy was born. Street parties were held for every occasion with home made decorations. Every house provided food to put on the make shift tables. Webster Road School, another important place was where this boy was educated or should we say attended! Can you see the tram on its way to Anfield, also the City of Liverpool Skyline on the River Mersey with the Royal Iris waiting to provide the Saturday night entertainment. Remember Yates Wine Lodge, well known for its white rum. A joke always popular in the 60s was if you’re looking for a Cathedral; don’t worry “we’ve got one to spare”. Joe asked, “Why did you leave Liverpool” “ cos I got a job as a missionary travelling the world and teaching them how to speak scouse.”

Pies on the Kop watching Liverpool F C
Joe Scarborough painted this one from memory, because the original was lost for some time. There are a number of items different can you spot them? Do you remember going through the Bill Shankly gates to the tea stand on the Kop. In those days they sold the best meat pies washed down with a cup of Oxo, but no prawn sandwiches like you’d expect today. What a different Liverpool we have now with the Albert Dock, a huge tourist attraction down by the Pier Head from where the Ferry Crosses the Mersey and you never walk alone in these busy streets of Liverpool. Spend sometime looking at the detail that Joe has captured, Paddy's wigwam on the city skyline. There is no Maggie May anymore but you might find her in Yates Wine Lodge on a Saturday night.
